Starship

Co-founded and built a modern product offering for the growing health savings industry. Starship was designed to help people find financial prosperity and peace of mind with rising healthcare costs.

We were successfully acquired in 2022 by Optum Financial, part of UnitedHealth Group, complementing their health benefits offerings.

Starship was not like any other HSA, but offered unique and novel features never seen in the industry before, like robo-investing, digital-cards, instant-signup, roundups, crowdfunding and so much more.

Tech Stack

Starship offered multiple front-ends to get access to the services. Most notably the App, built in react-native, running on iOS, Android and the web. The clients communicated through GraphQL to a federated backend, split up in various micro-services.

The frontend as well as the backend code was all written in TypeScript, optimizing for reuse and reducing context switching. The backend infrastructure was hosted on AWS.
